The project to restore and renovate Blackberry began earlier this year with a bang! Loud dump trucks and excavators took the first (painful) steps of removing the old kitchen which wasn’t in the best of shape. Little did we know at the time that the foundation underneath it was even worse off and required a complete overhaul.
The first of many, many surprises!
Surprise #2 was discovering that the chimney flues were a total disaster. We had hoped to simply reline them to get them all working again (there are 5 fireplaces in the house!) but the crumbling bricks from top to bottom made any quick fix out of the question.
A look at the rubble foundation that is a hallmark of a historic Nantucket home … and also the scariest thing you’ve ever seen when you realize your whole house sits on top of such a precarious stack of rocks!
But progress was made and foundations were poured and the project officially began. Yeah!
